Bathroom Break: When Nature Calls on the Field of Play

Running to the Bathroom

When you gotta go, you gotta go. And if you’re a professional athlete in the midst of competition, you have two choices: Let it out right then and there, or sprint for the nearest restroom. This past weekend, Rugby World Cup referee, Craig Joubert, opted for the latter.

While he’s been receiving a lot of heat concerning his swift exit, he’s certainly not the only sportsperson who’s made a run for the restroom during a game. The five competitors below took their own game-time bathroom breaks, though not all of them made it to the toilet:

Responsible Party: Julie Moss, Marathoner
When: 1982 Ironman Triathlon
What Went Down: Moss raced nearly 140 miles through the oceans and lava fields of Kona, Hawaii, before keeling over and becoming, in her words, an “ultimate, giant, chocolate mess.” Gross.

Responsible Party: Serena Williams, Tennis Player
When: 2001 Wimbledon Quarterfinals
What Went Down: Suffering from a stomach virus, Williams ran off the court during her quarterfinals match against Jennifer Capriati, yelling, “I can’t hold this anymore,” to the chair umpire.

Responsible Party: Manny Ramirez, Baseball Outfielder
When: Red Sox vs. Devil Rays, July 18, 2005
What Went Down: Manny being Manny, headed into Fenway Park’s Green Monster supposedly to relieve himself, only to return as the next pitch was being thrown.

Responsible Party: Nick Novak, Football Kicker
When: Chargers vs. Broncos, November 11, 2011
What Went Down: Novak got caught on camera preparing for a field goal by making a #1 right there on the sideline.

Responsible Party: Yoenis Cespedes, Baseball Outfielder

What Went Down: Cespedes was late to the field after spending a little extra time in the bathroom between innings.
