Are you one of those guys who wants to look stylish but finds it doesn’t come all that naturally? We feel you. Don’t fret: With some advice from LA-based stylist Rayne Parvis, we’re all going to learn how to dress a little better. In this edition, we’re looking at which shoes (and socks) to wear when you’re also wearing shorts.

Step #1: Know Your Options

White sneakers, boat shoes, slip-ons and sporty slides are all good choices when wearing shorts, according to Parvis. That’s because none of them are bulky enough (or flashy enough) to make your bare legs look smaller than they actually are—which is something to definitely watch out for when wearing shorts.

Step #2: Get Your Socks Right

We already discussed how to choose the right socks when wearing pants, but as every guy knows, shorts are an entirely different ball game: “White ankle socks and white tube socks pair well with white sneakers when wearing shorts, since you look like you’re purposefully going for that sporty white-on-white look,” Parvis explains. “Otherwise, I recommend wearing no-show socks, or if you’re wearing slides, no socks at all.”

If you’re the kind of guy that enjoys a little more coverage—and therefore doesn’t want to wear no-show socks—Parvis says ankle socks are also fine so long as you match them with the color of your shoes. “That way, you won’t attract any unwanted attention to your feet,” she says. Unless, of course, that’s what you’re going for.

Step #3: Get Wild With It

One of the newer trends Parvis points to is wearing printed socks with an otherwise plain outfit. “You can wear a minimalist outfit [chino shorts, a plain T-shirt and white sneakers] then go wild with your socks—maybe they have your favorite football team’s logo printed on them, or even a hamburger and fries if you’re into that,” she laughs. If you go this route, however, know that it’s a bold look—and it takes a bold (or an extra fashionable) dude to pull it off. The plus side, however, is you probably can get away with wearing the same outfit for multiple days in a row if you just change your socks every day.

If you have any questions about getting the look you want—fits, cuts, colors or anything else fashion-related—leave it in the comments and we’ll have a stylist answer it in an upcoming post.
